TEHRAN -- A collection of miniature paintings depicting scenes from the stories of the Georgian national epic “The Knight in the Panther’s Skin” was unveiled during a ceremony at the Diplomatic Gallery of the ECO Cultural Institute in Tehran last week.

The collection comprises 12 miniatures by Paris-based Iranian artist Sharareh Salehi, whose works are on display at many museums and art centers around the world such as the British Museum, the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, and the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation.

The miniatures will be put on display in an exhibition at the Georgian National Museum in the near future.

“The Knight in the Panther’s Skin”, consisting of over 1600 shairi quatrains, was composed by Shota Rustaveli (1172–1216), a prince and treasurer at the royal court of Queen Tamar of Georgia. It has been translated into many languages. Farshid Delshad translated the book into Persian, which was published in 1998.

The poem has been highly praised by literary critics for its language and dramatic effect. In the poem, Rustaveli talks about medieval humanistic ideals: chivalry, feelings of love, friendship, courtly love, courage and fortitude. The heroes of the poem are brave, philanthropic and generous.
