TEHRAN -- Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Rakhshan Bani-Etemad criticized the U.S. and EU sanctions against Iran during a press conference for her latest film “Tales” at the 71st International Venice Film Festival on Thursday.

She said that the embargos “actually penalized the people in the country,” AP reported.

Children with cancer and those who are suffering from very severe diseases like multiple sclerosis are the main target of the sanctions, she added and asked the West to lift the embargos.

The main members of the cast for “Tales”, Habib Rezaii and Peyman Moadi also accompanied Bani-Etemad in her trip to Venice.

The film features mostly female characters from Banietemad’s previous works, people who represent different layers of Iranian society.

It is competing with nine other films for the Venice Golden Lion in the International competition section.
