TEHRAN – Iranian expert Hossein Najjarzadegan has begun the restoration of a large collection of rare paintings preserved in Iran’s Majlis Library, Museum and Documentation Center.

“The tableaus are not preserved in a standard situation, and light, heat, biology and chemical changes have caused damage over the past years,” Najjarzadegan told the Persian service of CHN reported on Thursday.

Najjarzadegan has studied in the International Center for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) in Rome. He has collaborated with museums in Italy, Russia, Belgium, France, and several other countries.

“Part of the damage has been caused by the varnish used carelessly on the artworks,” he stated.

The collection of the museum contains a valuable painting, which was created in 1800, as well as an old miniature painting, he added.

The restoration of the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, a mother church in Assisi, Italy, and the historic Palatine Hill in Rome are among his credits.
