TEHRAN -- The Iranian director Zahra Sabri has adapted Omar Khayyam’s poetry and thoughts for an anti-war play.
The play entitled “Count to One” was staged at Tehran’s Play Workshop on November 18.
The play is about three soldiers, who decide to cease fighting in an unknown land. To express themselves, they begin making sculptures with mud.
“Khayyam talks about the present, living in the moment and loving,” Sabri told the Persian service of MNA on Wednesday.
“These attitudes do not belong to a certain time, but these can be regarded in every time,” she added.
“I have tried to show my hatred of war and my hope for life in this play,” she noted.
Sabri premiered the play at the 1st Moscow International Puppet Theatre Festival, which was held from November 2 to 8.
She said that her play was warmly received by the theatergoers at the festival.
“Staging this play at the festival was a difficult but happy experience. It is the desire of every director that his or her play is seen in his or her homeland. Thus, I hope this play can find its own fans in the country,” Sabri stated.
Mehdi Shahpiri, Reza Bahrami and Hossein Divan play the characters who exchange no dialogue during the play.
Composer Behrang Abbaspur clad in fatigues performs live in the stage.
Among Sabri’s credits are “The Earth and the Universe”, an adaptation of seven stories from Rumi’s Masnavi-ye Manavi, and “Macondo”, based on Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings”, which both have been acclaimed at many Iranian and international events.
