TEHRAN –
Organizers of the 16th Iran Cinema Celebration honored Kianush Ayyari, a filmmaker famous for his realistic features and dramas, with the lifetime achievements award on Monday.

The award was handed to Ayyari during the award-giving ceremony of the short film section of the celebration held at the Iranian House of Cinema (IHC) in Tehran, Persian media reported.

“I am happy to be honored tonight. Screening the music video of (my film) ‘To Be or Not to Be’ refreshed old memories,” Ayyari said, addressing the audience sitting in the IHC yard.

He expressed his thanks to the Iranian short Film Association and its director Majid Barzegar.

Ayyari also lamented over the ongoing misunderstandings about his movies. The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance has refused to authorize his controversial drama “The Paternal House” due to some allegedly violence scenes.

Secretary of the celebration Mohammad Bozorgnia gave the good news of screening short films across theaters. “This will be a great event in the short film industry,” he said.

He expressed his thanks to the Iranian short Film Association and its director Majid Barzegar for his collaboration with organizers. “The association was able to hold a larger celebration for the short films, while they respected the new policies.”

The IHC has economized on expenses in organizing the celebration in order to increase its commitments to members’ welfare and to establish an unemployment insurance fund for them.

“We are rich in short film productions but have problems in screening the productions and we hope to remove the obstacles on the way, ”IHC Managing Director Mohammad-Mehdi Asgarpur said in his short speech.

The best short film award was given to producer Anahita Qazvini for “Needle”, while Qazvini also received the best director award for her short feature.

Benyamin Haftlang received the best director award for his experimental short “A Room in New York”.

The celebration will reach its climax with the announcement of winners in the feature film section on September 12, which is Iran’s National Cinema Day.
