“A Cube of Sugar” is Iran’s best choice for Oscars: expert

 

“Due to its special directorial method and its weighty subject, the film may be able to realize the academy’s expectations from the Iranian cinema,” Amir-Hossein Alamolhoda told the Persian service of the Mehr News Agency on Tuesday.

 

“Due to its structure, the film is one of top films produced in Iran over the past thirty years, particularly over past few years. From the point of view of subject, the film narrates a local story through the global language of cinema,” he said.

 

In “A Cube of Sugar”, members of a large family come together in a happy friendly atmosphere to make preparations for their youngest sister’s engagement party. However, a series of bad news ruin everything planned. 

 

Alamolhoda said that the film has received positive feedback during its foreign premieres. It has also acclaimed in several international events, he added.

 

Since the Iranian film “A Separation” won an Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film this year, he said that another victory for Iranian cinema in the upcoming Oscars would be a difficult task.

 

“A Cube of Sugar” premiered in the U.S. in May 2012.

 

Mirkarimi’s family drama “So Close, So Far” was Iran’s submission for the Academy Awards in 2006.

 

Mirkarimi was a member an Iranian cultural delegation, which paid a visit to the Academy in October 2009 during “Up Close and Personal: Iranian Filmmakers in Their Own Words”, a program organized by UCLA and the Academy.

 

A board comprised of nine cineastes is annually appointed by the Farabi Cinematic Foundation to choose the Iranian submission to the Academy Awards.

 

The board will likely select one film for the 2013 Oscar submission from the following: “The Orange Dressed” directed by Dariush Mehrjuii, “The Queen” by Mohammadreza Basheh-Ahangar, “Here without Me” by Bahram Tavkkoli, “Alzheimer’s” by Ahmadreza Motamedi and “Death Is My Profession” by Amir-Hossein Saqafi.
