TEHRAN -- A photo essay on an acid attack in Iran has provoked sympathy of Time readers.
The readers of the American weekly have written comments, sympathizing with the victims of the attack.
The photos, which were taken by Iranian photojournalist Abolfazl Nesaii, depict the aftermath of the attack, during which a man poured acid over the faces of his wife, Somayyeh Mehri, and his two daughters, Rana and Nazanin, while they were sleeping at the home in a village in southeastern city of Bam in 2012, after Somayyeh filed for divorce.
The photos were previously put on display in an exhibition entitled “Daddy Poured Acid” at Tehran’s Mohsen Gallery, Nesaii told the Persian service of ISNA on Saturday.
“A writer of Time asked me to give her the photos to publish in the Light Box of the weekly,” he added.
“Just four hours after the photos were published in the newsletter, I received an email from the writer telling me that there are some readers asking how they can help the victims of the attack,” he stated.
Nesaii took the photos in period of time between May and December 2012. He has recently won first prize at the Sheed Awards, a social documentary prize for Iranian photographers.
He said that he published the photos with the aim of helping the victims of the crime.
“I also wanted to help stop similar attacks in the future,” he noted.
Somayyeh lost her sight in one eye. The skin across her face and arms is covered with rough, discolored scars. Her younger daughter, Rana, now at 3, has been disfigured and also lost one of her eyes. The older daughter, Nazanin, was injured less severely.
Somayyeh and Rana spend their time traveling between hospitals in Tehran and their home in the village of Hemmatabad near the city of Bam.
Somayyeh’s husband was released on bail last year. She has said that he has threatened her life.
