TEHRAN -- The Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization (CHTHO) plans to install a gate for the Alamut Castle, which was built on Mount Alamut’s highest peak near the northern Iranian city of Qazvin during the Seljuk era in 11th century.
The gate has been designed by CHTHO’s Alamut Research Center (ARC) based on documents available about it, ARC Director Hamideh Chubak told the Persian service of ISNA on Tuesday.
A contractor has been commissioned to make the gate out of wood, she said.
Installation of the gate is part of a restoration plan, which has been in progress at the castle since 2006.
The castle is comprised of lower and upper parts, each of which had a gate and the new gate will be installed in the lower part in late September, she added.
“Based on available information, we were able to find the original location of the gate last year,” Chubak stated.
She said that the gate will provide more security for the castle and also will help visitors get a better view of the monument.
Located near the northern Iranian city of Qazvin, the Alamut Castle was used by Hassan Sabbah, the founder of the order known as the Assassins, as a headquarters to command a chain of strongholds all over Iran and Iraq, a network of propagandists, a corps of devoted terrorists, and an unknown number of agents in enemy camps and cities, after he and his allies captured it in 1090.
Hassan Sabbah was the leader of the notorious Islamic sect, the Nizari Ismaeilites.
