TEHRAN – German Ambassador Brand Erbel and Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMCA) Director Ehsan Aqaii discussed the museum’s plan to hold the exhibition of the German sculptor and op artist Gunther Uecker on Tuesday.

A collection Uecker’s works will be showcased in an exhibition at the museum from September 16 until November 1.

The 82-year old Uecker is believed to be one of the most famous German artists since World War II, the TMCA announced in a press release on Wednesday.

Aqaii said that the exhibit would be a good chance for increased bilateral cultural collaboration.

Uecker is mostly interested in Asian culture and its mysticism, as well as the promotion of peace in the world, Aqaii said.

The ambassador also said that the exhibit will surely be very impressive since Uecker is one of the greatest artists of Germany and will be taking part in his exhibit despite his age.

He expressed hope that this will lead to an increase of cultural cooperation between the two countries.

Uecker’s oeuvre includes paintings, object arts and installations as well as stage designs and films. He is mostly interested in the eastern European avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s, but he is likewise fascinated by Asian cultures and their ideas.

His works can be seen in collections and at large fairs in both the West and the East. Uecker’s artistic creativity reached a climax in 2000 with the prayer room he designed for the rebuilt Reichstag building in Berlin.

Iranian artist Mehdi Rahimi has designed a poster for Uecker’s Tehran exhibit.
