TEHRAN -- An exhibition displaying works by Iranian photographer Shadi Qadirian and four other female Asian photographers is currently underway at Seattle’s Photo Center NW.

The four artists include the U.S.-based Afghan artist Gazelle Samizay, Indian photographers Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, Manjari Sharma and Priya Kambli.

The exhibit entitled “Social Order: Women Photographers from Iran, India and Afghanistan” explores the role of women in the context of cultural constructs, religion and the media.

Each of these artists has left an important mark on the world of contemporary photography through their courageous and relevant work.

Works from Qadirian’s collection “Qajar”, which was inspired by the studio portraiture first introduced to Iran in the late 19th century under the Qajar dynasty (1794-1925), has been put on display at the show.

In this collection, Qadirian employs painted backdrops and juxtaposes fashions of the day with modern elements.

She once said, “My pictures became a mirror reflecting how I felt: stuck between tradition and modernity.”

In addition, a number of her works from the collection “Nil, Nil” has also been selected for the exhibit. The roughness of military elements and smoothness of other items used in the ordinary life have been blended in this collection of still life photography.

The exhibition opened on October 26 and runs until December 15.
