TEHRAN -- A director has said that Iranian filmmakers need to revive protagonists in their works in order to draw people to revitalize the nation’s box office receipts.

Talking to the Persian service of ILNA on Tuesday, Mohsen Mohseninasab added that it is not the economic problems preventing people from going to watch films in theaters, rather, it is the lack of protagonists in the stories of the films that is the main factor for Iranians’ reluctance to going to cinema.

“Iran needs to bring back protagonists to its production in order to revitalize the national motion picture industry,” noted Mohseninasab, who plans to make the thriller “Free of Charge” with an all-Turkish cast.

He said that ten years ago, those films were promoting morals through their heroes were labeled as “superficial” by certain cineastes and cultural officials.

“By implementing improper policies and making unreasonable excuses, protagonists have been removed from the stories of films and since then, most of the films have deteriorated to nonsense. People never feel personal empathy with film characters anymore, so they see no reason to go cinema,” he added.

Mohseninasab plans to hire two Turkish stars, Kivanc Tatlitug and Tolgahan Sayisman, for his new film “Free of Charge”, which will be shot in Turkey and Cyprus.

The film tells the story of a group of children who seek refuge at Iraq’s borders due to the ongoing battles in Iraq and Syria, but they soon turn into victims of human trafficking in Turkey.
