TEHRAN – Iran and Turkmenistan plan to hold a joint conference in the northeastern Iranian city of Gonbad-e Kavus in May to review works and characters of Iranian Turkmen poet Magtymguly Pyragy.
The conference has been organized by the Golestan Department of Culture and Islamic Guidance and contains a series of programs.
About 70 Turkmen scholars, artists and researchers have been invited to the two-day conference, director of Golestan department Gholamreza Montazeri told the Persian service of ISNA on Monday.
About 20 scholars are expected to present their articles about the poet and his works at the conference, he said.
Visiting Iran’s Qabus Tower, the world’s tallest tower made of bricks, which was registered on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2012, as well as the Pyragy mausoleum located in Aq-Tuqai village, have also been arranged during their visit.
In addition, a collection of art, cultural and literary works along with Persian handicrafts will go on display in an exhibition to be set up on the sidelines of the conference, he added.
As the greatest Turkmen poet, Magtymguly (1733-1790) is considered to be the founder of authentic Turkmen literature by the people who speak the Turkic language.
The village Aq-Tuqai is located in the southeastern Caspian Sea region, the western portion of which is home to many Turkic-speaking Iranians.
A small number of Turkic-speaking Iranian people live in Bandar Turkmen in the western portion of Golestan Province, in the southeastern Caspian Sea region.
