TEHRAN -- Tehran’s Central Book City plans to hold a meeting entitled 100 Years of Italian Culture on October 14.
The meeting has been organized to mark the birth centenary of Italian novelist Elsa Morante (1912-1985) and her compatriot Giulio Einaudi, who was one of the most important publishers in Italian history.
Morante was also a short-story writer and poet who was known for the epic and mythical quality of her writings, which usually center upon the struggles of the young in coming to terms with the world of adulthood.
Morante’s “History” has been translated into Persian by Manucher Afsari, who will give a lecture at the meeting. The novel set in Rome between 1941 and 1947 depicts the arduous life of a simple, half-Jewish elementary school teacher and her son, born of a rape by a German soldier.
Her credits also include “House of Liars”, “Arturo’s Island”, the collection short stories “The Andalusian Shawl”, and two collections of poetry, “Alibi” and “The World Saved by Little Children”.
Einaudi founded Giulio Einaudi Editore in Turin in 1933 and has run the publishing house for 64 years.
Professor of the Iranian studies at the Sapienza University of Rome and cultural counselor at the Italian Embassy in Iran Carlo Cereti is scheduled to deliver a speech during the meeting.
In addition, a group of Iranian translators and scholars including Antonia Shoraka, Ali-Asghar Mohammadkhani and Emadeddin Fayyazi will give lectures at the discussion.
