TEHRAN -- Portuguese sculptor Mario Lopez has won first prize at the 4th Tehran International Sculpture Symposium.

The 30-year-old artist received the award for an abstract work he created based on a Japanese rock garden during the symposium, which was held at the Qasr Museum Garden from September 17 to October 7.

“I always attach a particular importance to working with the hands in creation of an artwork. I chose making sculpture because I think its outcome is more durable,” Lopez had said in an interview in Tehran.

The second prize was presented to the 59-year-old Spanish sculptor Miguel Isla. His works have been acclaimed at many international events. He won 1999    an award at the Montbrison International Sculpture Biennial in France in 1999.

The third prize was given to Iranian sculptor Milad Nabizadeh and Roland Mayer from Germany received an honorable mention.

Thirty-one Iranian and foreign artists participated in the symposium, which was organized by the Tehran Municipality.

The artists created 31 stone sculptures, which will be kept at the Tehran Municipality’s Beautification Organization.

The Tehran Municipality plans to organize other symposiums to give opportunities for those sculptors who are interested in working with wood, metal, and other media.
