TEHRAN -- An exhibition of the stringed instruments, which have been made by veteran vocalist Mohammadreza Shajarian, will open at the Iranian Artists Forum (IAF) on September 13.
His two newest instruments, which he calls the arghanun (organum) and the barbad (the name of a renowned musician during the reign of the Sassanid king Khosrow II), along with ten santurs made in various sizes will go on display at the exhibit, IAF has reported in a press release on Tuesday.
The shahrashub, sorahi, saghar, sabu, kereshmeh, bamsaz, tondar, and several other instruments are also among the items to go on display.
Shajarian held his first exhibit in the forum two years ago. However, this exhibit has been arranged to help the instruments find ways into the world of musicians and into a greater number of productions.
These instruments have been used in different concerts, Shajarian said, adding, “I have worked on the instruments to make them produce better sounds over the past two years”.
He also mentioned that these new instruments have the capacity to be played alongside other traditional instruments. “I have been in contact with singers, musicians and composers over the past 50 years and I believe Iranian music needs new instruments and new sounds,” he said.
“Over these years I have learned that Iran’s music needs new instruments that produce new sounds and with which the musicians are also comfortable,” he said previously.
These new instruments are for the next generation, but they need to be played more often by musicians now to get better results in the future.
Shajarian has used his new instruments during his concerts over the past few years.
The exhibit will be running until September 19 at the forum located on Musavi St., Taleqani Ave.
