TEHRAN -- Fifteen graves dating back to the Iron Age have recently been discovered near the town of Rudsar in the northern Iranian province of Gilan.

A team of archaeologists discovered the graves during an emergency excavation at the Siahsu ancient site, which faces the likelihood of being submerged by the Sifidab River, team director Shahram Ramin told the Persian service of ISNA on Tuesday.

The site was identified during a study project last year and the Iranian Center for Archaeological Research (ICAR) organized the emergency excavation, which was carried out from May 26 until July 10.

A number of bronze weapons, grey pottery works and some other artifacts have been unearthed from the graves.

The archaeologists surmise that the graves dated back to about 3000 years ago.
