Farabi Cinema Foundation honors veteran actors

TEHRAN -- Veteran Iranian actors Ezzatollah Entezami, Jamshid Mashayekhi, Mohammad-Ali Keshavarz, Ali Nasirian, and Davud Rashidi were commemorated during a ceremony in Tehran’s Farhang Theater Hall here on Sunday evening.
 
Organized by the Farabi Cinema Foundation (FCF), the event also paid tribute to the deceased actor Ali Hatami (1944-1996), the founder of Ghazali Cinematic Town and the director of great hits and TV series including “Mother” and “Hezar-Dastan”.
 
Speaking at the ceremony, Director of FCF Mohammadreza Jafari-Jelveh said that this is a ceremony honoring masters of art, theater and cinema, and those with years of experience.
 
“This ceremony is to respect the national cinema, the Iranian traditional cinema and the cinema of hope, which is rooted in the cinema of Ali Hatami,” he added.
 
The ceremony continued with a music video about Hatami, in which parts of his movies were screened.
 
Hatami’s great efforts in making Ghazali Town were also depicted in the music video, in which several actors had asked to name the town after Hatami.
 
Next, actress Leila Hatami, daughter of Ali Hatami, was called on stage to receive her father’s lifetime achievement award inscribed by master of calligraphy Gholamhossein Amirkhani.
 
The ceremony continued with the paying of tributes to the masters. Entezami and Keshavarz were not able to attend the ceremony due to recent health issues.
 
Mashayekhi was called on stage where he made a brief speech saying it is too late to honor Hatami now, “he should have been honored when he was alive.”
 
Nasirian expressed his thanks to the Farabi Foundation, which helped produce films after the Islamic Revolution (1979).
 
Rashidi also expressed his appreciation to the organizers of the event.

Fajr Fashion Festival to invite celebrities to collaborate as models

TEHRAN -- The 3rd Fajr Fashion Festival plans to invite Iranian celebrities to collaborate as models, the Committee for Organizing Costume and Fashion announced on Monday.
 
“We are determined to invite actors, artists and athletes to cooperate with the committee to help introduce Islamic Iranian fashion and costume designs,” the director of the committee Hamid Qobadi said Monday in in press conference on the 3rd Fajr Fashion Festival.
 
“I have personally talked with about 15 celebrities, and they have announced their willingness to cooperate,” he mentioned.
 
One of the problems of cinema and television is the costumes of the actors and actresses, so if we can assign a standard for their costumes, many problems would be removed, he said.
 
“We have also asked Iran’s Association of Costumes Designers to become a member of our art and cultural council,” Qobadi added.
Moreover, the committee has plans to organize a live fashion show for men. “If possible, there would a one-evening fashion event for men in Vahdat Hall.”
 
The committee will also be thinking of issuing licenses for fashion magazines. Additionally, an institute of teaching modeling to Iranian standards is due to be established next year.
 
The 3rd Fajr Fashion Festival will be held in Vahdat Hall from March 6 to 14.

Iran unveils quadrilingual dictionary in India

TEHRAN – A quadrilingual Persian-Hindi-Urdu-English dictionary was unveiled during a ceremony in New Delhi on Sunday.
 
The dictionary has recently been published by Al-Hoda, a major Iranian international publisher, in collaboration with the Iranian cultural attaché’s office in New Delhi.

Iranian films line up for Irish festival

TEHRAN – Four Iranian films will go on screen at the Silk Road Film Festival, which will be held in Dublin, Ireland from March 19 to 25.
 
“The Sleepy” directed by Hassan Khorasani, “Renovation” by Mohammad Haddadipur, “Blue Bubble” by Farshad Khoshbakht and “Those Who Remain” by Farzan Moazzam will compete in various section of the event.
 
The Silk Road Film Festival (SRFF) screens films from countries that were once part of this historical network of ancient trade routes, and focuses in particular on Asian, Arab and Middle Eastern cinema.

“Existence and Existents” appears in Persian

TEHRAN – The Persian version of French philosopher Emmanuel Levinas’ “Existence and Existents” has recently been published by the Iranian company, Qoqnus.
 
Masud Olia translated the book into Persian.
 
Levinas (1906–1995) is mostly known for his work related to philosophy, existentialism, ethics and ontology.

Iranian readers to enjoy German poems

TEHRAN -- An anthology of German poems has recently been published in Persian.
 
The two-volume book entitled “German Poetry from the Beginning to the Present” was released by Parseh Publications. It includes 104 poems, which have been selected and translated by Ali Ghazanfari.
 
The book covers German poetry from the “Merseburg Incantations”, which were composed in the 9th or 10th century, to works by contemporary German poets.

Modern Iranian women’s attire on display at ECO Cultural Institute

TEHRAN – The Economic Cooperation Organization’s Cultural Institute in Tehran is currently playing host to the Exhibition of Modern Apparel for Iranian Women.
 
Organized by Iran’s Giva Designers Group the exhibition will show works by Samaneh Sayyar, Somayyeh Musavi and Fatemeh Kazemzadeh until March 6.
 
“We are seeking to create costume designs so that everybody can recognize them as Iranian,” Sayyar told the Persian service of IRNA on Monday.
 
The group has previously held three exhibitions, which were exclusively for women. 
 
But, men are also allowed to visit the exhibition at the ECO Cultural Institute.
 
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the exhibition on Sunday, ECO Cultural Institute President Iftikhar Hussain Arif said that clothing is an important part of every culture and added that the institute aims to preserve the regional culture of ECO member states by holding such an exhibition.
 
He also said that the costume designs in this region are different from those that are common in the West. 
 
He asked all ECO members states to help introduce their regional costumes to other countries.

Hafez Nazeri unveils “Untold” in Tehran

TEHRAN -- The Iranian composer and string instrumentalist Hafez Nazeri unveiled his latest album “Rumi Symphony Project Cycle I: Untold” during a ceremony in Tehran on Sunday.
 
Sony Classical will release the album worldwide on March 11. 
 
Speaking at the ceremony at Milad Tower, Hafez Nazeri said that his major concern is developing new ideas in music.
 
“I tried to introduce Iranian music to the world with a new approach to this art,” he added.
 
“This album is composed of four chapters, first of which focuses on the creation of humans,” he stated.   
 
“The second chapter centers on the Earth, the third features Attar’s ‘seven cities of love’, and the last chapter is dedicated to death and unity,” he added.
 
Nazeri asked Iranian musicians to unite to globalize Iranian music.  
 
His father, vocalist Shahram Nazeri, the Iranian composer Loris Tjeknavorian, Iran’s Music House Managing Director Hamidreza Nurbakhash and critic Javad Mojabi attended the ceremony, which was held at Milad Tower.
 
“The release of this album with such a high level of quality by a major international company like Sony Classical is really amazing,” Nurbakhash said.
 
“I am glad to see that today, the Iranian youth with various outlooks share their new experiences with those who are interested in music,” Tjeknavorian stated.
  
“This album is the outcome of the efforts of a young man who wanted to express something new,” Shahram Nazeri said.
 
Co-produced by David Frost and 38 Grammy winning musicians and engineers, “Untold” features Shahram Nazeri, Zakir Hussein, and translations by Deepak Chopra.
 
The ensemble plans to tour Canada and the United States from March 8 to April 26 to promote the album.

Foreign literati attend seminar on Persian literature

TEHRAN -- Foreign scholars from 10 countries are attending the 7th International Seminar of Persian Language and Literature, which opened at Hormozgan University in Bandar Abbas.

Twenty-two literati from India, Turkey, Bangladesh, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Iraq, Tajikistan, Senegal, France and Syria will deliver speeches during the meeting, seminar secretary Najmeh Dorri told the Persian service of ISNA on Tuesday.

The latest studies on Persian language and literature are scheduled to be discussed at the two-day seminar.

The lingual relations between Persian and Arabic, folk literature, narrative literature, comparative literature and literary criticism are some of the subjects, which are slated to be discussed at the seminar.

Over 300 articles were submitted to the seminar, 104 of which will be published in a book.

The previous edition of the seminar was held at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran.

Iranian nomads to familiarize Tehran residents with their lifestyle

TEHRAN – Iranian nomads will set up their tents to familiarize people with their lifestyle in an exhibition that opens tomorrow at Tehran’s Azadi Square.

Over ninety groups of nomads living in various regions across the country will display their artworks and cultural artifacts during the month-long exhibition entitled “Iranian-Islamic Culture and Lifestyle”, secretary of the exhibit Farzad Qasemzadeh said in a press release on Tuesday.

Organized by Tehran Municipality’s Art and Cultural Organization, a variety of Persian handicrafts, traditional artworks and foods are to be offered in a series of pavilions at the exhibit, Qasemzadeh added.

The festival has been organized to highlight the manifestation of local culture of different tribes living in the country, Qasemzadeh said, adding, “This variety of lifestyle will give the city dwellers a chance to be released from their boring lifestyles and return to their origins.”

A series of local games, street plays and live music performances have also been arranged on the sidelines of the program.

Tehran photo exhibition explores modern Poland

TEHRAN -- A photo exhibition, which is currently underway at the Iranian Photographers Center in Tehran, showcases various aspects of modern life in Poland.

The photos are from the Iranian photographer Qadir Vaqari’s series “Poland, the Phoenix of the Age”.

The exhibition, which has been organized with the help of the Embassy of Poland, runs until March 6 at the center located on the western end of Somayyeh St.

Vaqari also has collections on Turkey, Tajikistan, Bulgaria, and Saudi Arabia (Mecca and Medina).

Tehran gallery to display abstract paintings

TEHRAN -- Abstract paintings by 29 renowned artists will go display in an exhibition, which is scheduled to open at the gallery of the Mellat Cinema Complex on Friday.  

Works by four generations of this genre of painting in Iran have been selected for the exhibition entitled “Abstraction and Expression”.

Hossein Kazemi, Farideh Lashaii, Bita Vakili, Iraj Eskandari, Mostafa Dashti, Masud Arabshahi, Nikzad Arabshahi and Parivash Ganji are among the artists.

Farnaz Mohammadi will curate the exhibition, which will run until May 6.  

The exhibition is organized by the Tasvir-e Shahr Institute, which is affiliated with the Tehran Municipality.

The Mellat Cinema Complex is located on Kordestan Highway, off Niayesh Highway.

Master of communications management Ali-Akbar Farhangi honored

TEHRAN – Ali-Akbar Farhangi, known to be the father of Iran’s communications management, was honored during a ceremony at the National Library and Archives of Iran on Monday.

A number of officials and cultural figures attended the ceremony including secretary of the Eternal Figures Committee Mahmud Asadi, and director of the Bureau of Media Studies and Planning Mohammad Soltanifar.

Speaking at the ceremony, Asadi said that honoring the veteran is a good step however officials need to pay more attention to communications courses.

Soltanifar next said that Farhangi loves his country Iran. He had many opportunities to live outside Iran but he chose to live and serve his country.

He added that Farhangi also own a rare collection of Iranian music albums in his home.

Farhangi also delivered a short speech and said that his great honor is to see that his students have become masters now.

“I am proud for the kindnesses of God, which have helped me follow the profession that I loved and I tried to do my career in the best way possible,” Farhangi said.

He next expressed his gratitude to all his colleagues and the academics who had attended the ceremony.

The ceremony was brought an end with the unveiling of a stamp issued in honor of Farhangi.

The 71-year old Farhangi, is a graduate of Ohio University and has a post Ph.D. in communications.
He has written several books on communications and management.

Farhangi was honored as Iran’s eternal figure in management in 2005.

Iranian cineastes ask for release of abducted border guards

TEHRAN -- Thousands of Iranian actors, directors, producers and screenwriters have issued a statement asking the United Nations, international leaders, and the government of Pakistan to take action to return five Iranian border guards who were kidnapped by the Pakistani rebel group Jaish al-Adl.
 
“We Iranian cineastes respectfully request that all influential international officials, the UN, and the friendly neighboring government of Pakistan to do their utmost in a humanitarian effort to return the innocent guards to their families,” the cineastes wrote in the statement, which was published in the Iranian media outlets on Wednesday.
 
Ezzatollah Entezami, Jamshid Mashayekhi, Ali Nasirian, Mohammad-Ali Keshavarz, Davud Rashidi, Asghar Farhadi, Parviz Parastuii, Reza Kianian, Rakhshan Bani-Etemad, Kamak Tabrizi, Mahtab Keramati, Tamineh Milani and Bahram Radan are among the cineastes who signed the statement.
 
Groups of cultural figures and university professors have also asked for the release of the border guards in separate statements that have been published over the past week.    
 
Jaish al-Adl posted photos of the five men on twitter in early February, claiming responsibility for the abduction.
 
Jaish al-Adl’s name was raised for the first time in October when they killed 14 Iranian border guards in an ambush near the city of Saravan in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

Tehran to greet New Year with new murals

TEHRAN – Tehran will be greeting the Iranian New Year with new murals and paintings.
 
Organized by Tehran Municipality’s Beautification Organization, a number of artists have been commissioned to refresh or renew the paintings and murals in different districts of Tehran, the organization announced in a press release on Wednesday. 
 
Simple and minimal designs that are coordinated with their environment have been chosen for the walls across the city, an official from the organization Mehdi Qadyanlu said.
 
Over 40 artists will be completing their projects before March 18, he said, adding that they are free to choose their colors but they must use the colors in ways consistent with the environment.
 
“Tehran is too large to embrace many different types of designs, but we are determined to achieve a visual standard,” he said.
 
He added that most of the artists have been selected by the organization due to their previous collaborations. However, some have been recommended by the Iran’s Painters Association.

Belgrade hosts meeting on Iranian, Serbian epic poetry

TEHRAN – A meeting on Persian and Serbian epic poetry was held at the Belgrade Public Library Hall on Tuesday evening.
 
A group of Serbian authors and literary scholars attended the meeting, which was organized by Iran’s cultural attaché’s office in Belgrade.
 
Iran’s cultural attaché Mahmud Shaluii made a speech on the epic poetry in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh.
 
He read parts of the story of Rustam and Sohrab from the Shahnameh for the audience and stated that Ferdowsi recognized ignorance as the most dangerous enemy of humans.
 
“Knowledge, wisdom, kindness, peace and friendship are the main themes of the Shahnameh stories,” he added.
 
Speaking at the meeting, Radolslav Mitic of the University of Belgrade said that he learned much from the remarks made at the gathering.
 
He expressed his thanks to Iran’s cultural attaché for holding the meeting.
 
Afterwards, the Iranian professor Saeid Safari delivered a speech about the characteristics of epic poetry and compared the Ballads of Marko Kraljevic with Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh.
 
The meeting came to an end with the recitation of Persian translations of some Serbian poems by a group of Serbian students of the Persian language.

Carpet tableaus by visually impaired Iranian artists on display at Kuwaiti gallery

TEHRAN – A collection of carpet tableaus by four visually impaired Iranian artists are currently on display in an exhibition at the Ahmed Al-Adwani Hall in Kuwait.
 
The tableaus feature suras (chapters)of the Holy Quran, verses of Persian poems and some fantastic scenery.
 
The collection, which contains 35 tableaus, has been created by Masumeh Fereidun, Zahra Homaii, Zeinab Babri and Anita Sirus for the exhibit entitled “Beauty Is in Our Eyes”. 
 
Other handicrafts by the artists are also on display on the sidelines of the exhibition.
 
The exhibit, which has been organized by the Iranian cultural attaché’s office in Kuwait, will come to an end today.

Calligraphic painting exhibition to raise funds for children with cancer

TEHRAN – Babak Rashvand will put a collection of his calligraphic paintings on display in an exhibition, which will open at Seyhun Gallery on Friday, to raise funds for children with cancer.
 
All the money raised from the event showcasing six large-sized tableaus will go to the Mahak Charity Society and the Behnam Daheshpur Charity Organization, both of which are dedicated to children with cancer, Rashvand told the Persian service of ISNA on Wednesday.
 
“I used to do painting and calligraphy separately, but in 1997, I decided to follow calligraphic paintings professionally. My father was a calligrapher and I learned calligraphy in its classic style but later concentrated on a modern style,” he added.
 
“I have also studied graphic designs and decided to make use of this art to create a new and different style in my works,” he said.
 
“Focusing on new and creative forms, I decided to leave the classic forms of letters in calligraphy and add color and light to make a wide range of tonalities,” he explained.
 
The exhibit will be running until March 12 in the gallery which can be found at No. 11, 4th Alley, Vozara St.

Joint exhibition of Iranian, Chinese female artists welcomed in Shanghai

TEHRAN – A joint exhibition by Iranian and Chinese female artists has been warmly welcomed at the Shanghai Mass Art Center. 
 
Works by Iranian miniaturist Zahra Namvar and painter Khadijeh Hajilu along with works by a number of Chinese female artists have been put on display in the exhibition, which opened on March 5.
 
Organized by Iran’s Islamic Culture and Relations Organization, the exhibit is to commemorate International Women’s Day, which is today, March 8.
 
A number of Iranian and Chinese art and cultural figures including director of Mass Art Xia Ing and Consul General of Iran in Shanghai Mohammad-Hadi Sobhani attended the opening ceremony, the Persian service of IRNA reported on Friday.
 
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Xia Ing expressed her thanks to the organizers of the exhibit and said that art is a language of all nations and can bring them closer to one another.
 
She added that these types of exhibits can help introduce Persian art to the Chinese and provide the grounds for the artists of both countries to make better use of their experiences.
 
Mohammad-Hadi Sobhani regarded such events the best means to develop cultural relations between the two countries, and hoped that these programs make people of China more familiar with Iranian artists. 
 
The exhibit will be running until March 10.
