TEHRAN – A Persian translation of the book “Yes Is More: An Archicomic on Architectural Evolution” by Bjarke Ingels was unveiled during a ceremony here at Tehran’s Art Bureau on Tuesday.

“Yes Is More” is the first monograph devoted exclusively to the trailblazing practice of BIG, a Copenhagen-based group of architects, designers and thinkers operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, research and development.

Translator Ali Hamidi Moqaddam, painter and art critic Aidin Aghdashlu, architect Bahram Shirdel, cinema critic Amir Purya and Managing Director of 2A Magazine Ahmad Zohadi attended the unveiling ceremony.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Hamidi Moqaddam said that it took him about two years to translate the book and that he is happy to see great architects and artists attending the ceremony.

The book enjoys a simple language and the author has a new insight into architecture, Zohadi stressed.

Aghdashlu also delivered a brief speech and said despite its simple language, the book provides a rich context that needs to be understood. “I enjoyed looking at the book and reading part of it, but I still do not know how useful it can be.”

“Architecture is of great importance and is considered the highest achievement of mankind, which can be spotted from a distance; it differs from a small palm-sized manuscript,” he added.

He also stated, “We should wait and see to what extent the book and its theories can be useful in the society. Personally, I can’t tolerate seeing our mosques being built in the style of a mosque in Cairo; why should we follow their styles, which are of course attractive in their own setting.” He asked.

Purya was the last to speak and, comparing the book with cinema, said that the book reveals the backstage process of the formation of many designs in the world; therefore it will have an impact on readers.

TEHRAN -- Iran’s High Council of Public Culture (HCPC) agreed to the Culture Ministry’s proposal to register a day on the Iranian calendar to be named after the poet Saib of Tabriz (1601-1677), the minister of culture and Islamic guidance announced on Tuesday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the National Congress of Saib of Tabriz at Tehran’s Vahdat Hall, Mohammed Hosseini said, “We obtained the approval of the council, but we expect the experts on Saib to help choose a day on the calendar.”

“His birthday or the anniversary of his death will be registered on the calendar, when the dates are determined,” he added.

Saib of Tabriz was one of the greatest masters of a form of classical Arabic and Persian lyric poetry characterized by rhymed couplets and known as the ghazel.

Saib was educated in Esfahan, and in about 1626/27 he traveled to India, where he was received into the court of Shah Jahan, the Mogul emperor who built the Taj Mahal.

He also spent a few years in Kabul and in Kashmir. After his return, Safavid king Shah Abbas II bestowed upon him the title of King of Poets.

Saib’s reputation is based primarily on some 300,000 couplets, including his epic poem Qandahar-nama (“The Campaign Against Qandahar”). His “Indian style” verses reveal an elegant wit, a gift for the aphorism and the proverb, and a keen appreciation of philosophical and intellectual exercise.

TEHRAN -- An Iranian scholar said that he is currently compiling documents on the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, which are kept at three universities in the United States of America, for publication in Iran.

“In my previous studies, I felt the need to research the U.S. official outlook on the eight-year war, which was imposed upon Iran,” Erfan Qaneifard told the Persian service of ISNA on Thursday.

The issues such as inciting Saddam Hussein to wage war against Iran, the Western states’ full support of Iraq, and getting the Persian Gulf Arab states united against Iran have been the focus of this study, he added.

In addition, reports on Iran’s capabilities in the military, financial, and security areas have been taken into consideration.

He said that there is also much classified information about Iranian commanders and officials, but scholars are still not allowed to have access to it.

“There are also documents showing how the brave Iranian combatants fought shoulder to shoulder and sacrificed themselves for their country in the war,” Qaneifard stated.

“Reading some of the documents brings tears to the eyes of every Iranian,” he added.

He expressed his hope that Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance would allow him to publish the information in a book after the compilation of the data is complete.

He is author of “After 60 Years”, the memoirs of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, which was published in three volumes.

His credits also include “Trapped in the Event”, an interview with former Savak director Parviz Sabeti, and “The Storm of the Events”, about a Savak secret agent in Iraqi Kurdistan.
