TEHRAN – Iran has recently submitted two documents on the Lut Desert and Iranian aqueducts (qanats) for registration on UNESCO’s list of the Natural World Heritage Sites and the World Heritage List.

UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee will decide on the registration of the historical and natural heritage sites during its session in 2016, Deputy Director of Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organization (CHTHO) Mohammad-Hassan Talebian told the Persian service of ISNA on Monday.

Qanats are underground aqueducts that are mainly found in the desert regions of the country such as Yazd. The artificial channels carry water from aquifers in the hills to the fields below and are still use today.

Information on 11 qanats, including Baladeh Qanat and Zarech Qanat in Yazd, Hassanabad Moshir Qanat in Mehriz, and Doqolu Qanat in Bam have been provided for the documents that Iran sent to UNESCO for registering qanats, Talebian said.

TEHRAN -- Logan Hall of the University of London and Tehran’s Milad Tower will host fans of Iranian pop star Benyamin for concerts, which aim to forge link between Valentine’s Day and Sepandarmazgan, an ancient celebration during which Iranian people honor the female members of their families with presents.

The London concert will be held on February 14, which is Valentine’s Day, and his Tehran gig is scheduled to be done on February 18, which is the day of Sepandarmazgan.

“By chance, my concert in London will coincided with Valentine Day, which is the day of love in the West, and the Tehran concert will coincided with the day of Sepandarmazgan,” he said in a press release on Monday.

“We thought we would use this coincidence as a chance to promote Iranian culture at the London concert so we called the concerts ‘the festival Iranian love’,” he added.

“We do not need to be copycats of Western customs, which belong to their culture, because we have more attractive examples in the customs in our own culture,” stated Benyamin, who belongs to the new generation of Iranian pop singers.

Benyamin’s 4-year-old daughter, Barana, will accompany him during his trip to London. His wife, Nasim Heshmati, was killed in a car crash in Tehran in December 2013.

Benyamin’s 2006 album, “85”, was warmly welcomed within Iran and with the Iranian diaspora abroad. His smash hits include “Memories” (“Khatereha”), “Stutter” (“Loknat”) and “Robot” (“Adam Ahani”).
