In a statement which was published by the Persian service of ISNA on Sunday, Rahbari spoke of Alizadeh’s good reputation in the West and said that he has been informed about Alizadeh’s achievements over the past 40 years.

“I hope very much that the great ability the Almighty has bestowed upon you will bring a huge improvement in the condition of Iranian music and musicians,” he stated.

Last week, Rahbari asked Alizadeh to reject the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor after the French Embassy announced that France was planning to honor Alizadeh with the French decoration.

In an open letter published on Saturday, Alizadeh announced his decision to reject the award.

He thanked the French officials and the ambassador over their plan to honor him and wrote, “I derive satisfaction from the good name of Hossein Alizadeh, and I shall never add a suffix or prefix to it until the end of my life.”

“As I congratulate all the great Iranian and world luminaries who have received the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, I deem myself free from the desire for any medal,” he added

TEHRAN -- Tehran’s Saba Art and Cultural Institute will be playing host to the ninth edition of the Iranian National Biennial of Persian Painting, which will open on December 6.

A collection of Persian paintings in five different categories including miniature, illumination and drawing will be on show at the exhibit, secretary of the exhibit Amir Tahmasbi said in a press conference held on Monday.

He added that Iranian contemporary artists are not after copying works by veterans; on the contrary, a new and specific definition of Persian painting has been formed these days.

“Of course, one cannot deny the connection of this art with the past; however this type of art enjoys detailed visual forms which have been specified by the artist and the rhythm of his work.

“As rhythm is observed in poetry, it is visible in Persian painting too. Persian painting has its own definition among people, but our artists have taken a different path compared to older artists and they try to offer a different meaning for it,” he explained.

Tahmasbi added that a board of selection has chosen the works and the finalists will be announced before the exhibit ends on December 31.

A valuable book containing works by the participants as well as works by the masters and veterans is scheduled to be published during the exhibit.

Franz Kafka commemorated in Tehran

TEHRAN -- The Persian literary monthly Bokhara paid tribute to the German language author Franz Kafka (1883–1924), one of the most influential authors of the 20th century, during a ceremony at the Mahmud Afshar Foundation on Sunday.

The Czech Chargé d’Affaires Petr Stepanek, Cultural Attaché of the German Embassy Otto Graf, along with several Iranian literati attended the meeting, Persian media reported on Monday.

The lecturers reviewed works by the author and praised his position as a cultural heritage of Prague and central Europe.

Contemporary author Mahmud Dowlatabadi, famous for his novel “Kalidar”, made a short speech at the ceremony, admiring Kafka for his ability in writing on the major points of life using the shortest descriptions with his miraculous endings.

“Kafka is not important in his own self, rather, he is known for his influence on the literature of the 20th century of Europe, having left an impression on us as well,” Dowlatabadi said.

He called Kafka a mortal resistance against inertia, an individual who knows he will be defeated but still resists.

Richard Muller, a Czech literature professor at Charles University in the U.S., who currently teaches at New York University in Prague, was next who delivered a short speech on Kafka and his works.

The translator of Kafka’s books into Persian Ali-Asghar Haddad was the next who talked about the characteristics of the author.

“Kafka was born in 1883 in Prague, lived for 41 years and died in 1924 in Vienna. He is not alive to explain about his works, he is only among us in photos, posters and books along with huge articles written about him. The articles try to explain about him and his works, however they do not reach a conclusion, and that is why each time new questions are added to the previous ones,” Haddad said.

Many readers try to seek the author within his works and many critics believe that one needs to know the time of Kafka in order to know him and his books.

A documentary about life of Kafka was screened for the participants who later visited the exhibition of the Persian translations of Kafka’s books and his photos held on the side section of the program.

TEHRAN – An international exhibition of posters focusing on the liberation struggle icon Nelson Mandela will open at the Iranian Artists Forum (IAF) in Tehran on Friday.

“Nelson Mandela, the Bird of Freedom” features the moral values of the anti-apartheid South African leader who promoted forgiveness and reconciliation in the world, IAF director Majid Sarsangi said in a press conference on Monday.

“In a world drowned in politics, where kindness and compassion are being ignored, Mandela was an individual who preserved his moral values while engaging in his political activities. He spent many years in prison but he forgave his enemies when he was freed and tried to infuse the spirit of kindness into the (hearts) of his people,” he said.

Organizer of the exhibit Yazdan Sadi called the death of Mandela the most significant event in 2013, citing it as the major reason for arranging the exhibit.

Swiss artists Sabina Oberholzer and Renato Tagli, and American poster designer Scott Laserow worked together as jury members of the exhibit, and have selected the final works for the show, Sadi added.

He addressed the opening ceremony of the 10th Islamic Conference of Information Ministers, which was held in Tehran on Wednesday with the motto “Media Convergence for Peace and Calm in the Islamic World.”

“The Islamic world is suffering from lack of media knowledge and an information gap, and Islamic nations should expand their media and information connections in order to efficiently fight against the divisive policies of the enemies,” he stated.
