Former Iranian POW dedicates memoirs of captivity to Saddam Hussein

TEHRAN -- Seyyed Nasser Hosseinipur, a former Iranian prisoner of war, has dedicated the Arabic translation of the memoirs of his long captivity in Iraq during the 1980s to Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, who ruled the country for over two decades.

“With a deep love, I dedicate this book to Saddam, because it was created as a result of his actions,” Hosseinipur said during a ceremony held in Tehran on Tuesday to introduce the Arabic translation of “A Foot That Was Left Behind”.

In “A Foot That Was Left Behind”, Hosseinipur describes the torture he suffered during his 880 days of captivity in Iraq.

He is captured by the Iraqi soldiers after he is injured in his leg during a military operation when he is only 16. His leg is cut off after he is transferred into Iraq.

Hosseinipur dedicated the Persian version of the book, which was published by Sureh-Mehr in 2012, to Walid Farhan, an Iraqi sergeant of the Tikrit War Prisoners Camp 16, who tortured him during his captivity.

“To Iraqi Sergeant Walid Farhan, the commander of the guards of the Tikrit War Prisoners Camp 16,” he wrote in the beginning of his book.

“I don’t know, perhaps, he was killed in the first Persian Gulf War by George H.W. Bush. Or, maybe he was killed during the second Persian Gulf war by George W. Bush. Or maybe he is still alive. [To] a man, whose leaders’ actions caused an eternal curse on his homeland. [To] a man, who tortured me near the shrines of my ancestors. [To] a man who when he annoyed me, Shia Iraqi guard Ali Jarallah looked and wept. Maybe he (Walid Farhan) feels ashamed… With a deep love, I dedicate this book to him, for all the beauty he created by his behavior. And, what happened to me was nothing but beauty,” he added.

Hosseinipur wrote the book based on notes he had inscribed in the margins of newspapers and books the terrorist group MKO (Mojahedin Khalq Organization) distributed in the prisoners’ camps in Iraq. He hid the notes in his canes to transfer them to Iran after his release.

“A Foot That Was Left Behind” was translated into Arabic by Kamal al-Sayed.

TEHRAN – The International Gallery Exposition, the first of its kind in Iran displaying works from 24 world galleries, began yesterday in Tehran’s Qasr Garden Museum.

Twenty four galleries from different countries are displaying about 300 valuable artworks at the exposition, the museum Managing Director Mohammadreza Saeidi said in a press conference on Tuesday.

A painting by Pablo Picasso, two works by Joan Miro, and two sculptures by Salvador Dali are seen among the items on show, he added.

The artworks have come from Spain, Peru, South Korea, Japan, Italy, Turkey and several other countries.

Several gallery owners, artists and art experts are also in Tehran aiming to be more in direct contact with Iranian artists. “They want to gain access to the source of Iranian artworks,” he said.

He added that no Iranian galleries are attending the program, however, works by several Iranian artists, including Jalal Shabahangi, Reza Kianian, Hamid Pazoki, Ahmad Vakili and Ali Shirazi can be seen on display.

“We did not plan to put works on sale, however if any individual would like to acquire any of the works, the selling prices are available,” he mentioned.

Picasso’s painting with 2.8 million dollars is the highest priced at the exhibit.

Saeidi also explained that over the past six months, foreign experts have visited the location of the museum, prepared films and photos for their gallery owners, and finally approved the location, which has been improved based on world standards.

Each gallery knew in advance the exact location in the museum where their works would be displayed, he added.

The exhibition will run until July 4, and has been organized by the Nasl-e Aftab Cultural and Sport Institute, an Iranian NGO, to raise funds for people suffering from rare diseases.

Mayjune Gallery from South Korea, Palma Arte Gallery from Italy, Petit Atelier from France, the National Gallery of Izmir from Turkey and Uniplastic Gallery from Switzerland are among the participating galleries.

Doc explores aftermath of Iraqi chemical attack on Sardasht

TEHRAN – An Iranian director has made a documentary about the miserable lives of five women in the aftermath of the Iraqi chemical attack on the Iranian town of Sardasht during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.

“The Dawn Which Smelled of the Aroma of Lemon” was screened during a ceremony the Bar Association of Iran on Tuesday, four days before the 27th anniversary of the tragedy, which occurred on June 28, 1987.

The film was reviewed by a panel composed of director Azadeh Bizargiti, filmmaker and actor Marizeh Vafamehr, researcher Susan Shariati, and lawyer Sattar Azizi.

Speaking at the ceremony, Vafamehr said that the film is a unique one for its kind since it depicts the war and its painful aftermath from the females’ point of view.

“I personally regard the movie as very successful, since it describes the event and the people very well,” she added.

Shariati next made a brief speech after the film screening, and said that the beauty of the film is that it is not about war, but it is about life, “working after the war, love after the war, family after the war and poverty after the war.”

The doc centers on the pain and sorrow of both genders and indicates that how the female victims of the war experience life differently when compared with the male victims of the war, she said.

Bizargiti dedicated her film to the civilian victims of the attack who were participating in the ceremony and said, “I chose Sardasht since I felt the region has been left alone and less attention is being paid to the chemically-wounded women.”

“War is a catastrophe, a disaster that does not know male or female, but when war veterans are talked about only men are remembered, not women. Nobody knows how women suffer in the dark corners of their homes,” she added.

Parvin Vahedi, a female civilian a part of whose life was documented in the film, also made a brief speech and hoped that nobody would experience the pain and sorrow they went through in Sardasht.
